Costa Rica Day 7

Hey guys! It's Audrey, Cyan, Katie, and Kailey here -

To wrap up our trip we got an early start around 5:30, loaded up the bus, and said goodbye to our villa and the villa pup, Moffy. We drove about two and a half hours until we stopped to buy some last minute trinkets and check out the crocodiles. While on the lookout for crocodiles, we also got to see a few iguanas and parrots.

We then continued on our journey to Punta Leona, but check-in wasn't until 3:00 so we were able to spend a couple of hours at the beach. We all jumped right into the water and body surfed some gnarly waves. Eventually we all split up and were able to venture over to some rocky parts of the beach and explore. We collected pieces of coral and shells. While at the beach Audrey came face to face with one of her greatest fears...RACCOONS!!

After a couple hours on the beach, we headed back up to eat lunch. Lunch consisted of an interesting buffet of yummy mashed yucca, rice with bits of pineapple, and more, plus a whole fridge full of fancy desserts. The favorite? "Out-of-this-world vanilla ice-cream!"

We then returned to the water, but this time in the form of a pool. While some sunbathed and others jumped into the hot tub, Megan and Kailey were busy winning free nachos and chicken tenders in a game of bingo. At this point we were able to check into our rooms and settle in for the evening. After about two hours, we headed back out to have dinner and returned to our rooms. It was a time of rest that was dearly needed by all of us.

Overall, this restful day has given us time to reflect on the week and what God has done in us and for us, both individually and as a team. We have gained a new perspective of life within San Jose and the surrounding provinces. (In fact, we were able to visit four of the seven provinces in Costa Rica: San Jose, Cartago, Limón, and Puntarenas.) It was very cool to see how soccer is able to cross boundaries and borders, enabling us to connect with people that we didn't even share the same language with. God has shown us that there are many more similarities than there are differences between us. We have better understood how our own captivation with the material world hinders our relationships with the people that are right next to us and even our own God. We tend to develop pride in our material wealth, which blinds us to our spiritual, emotional, and relational poverty, as well as the complex struggles that other cultures face. We are more similar to the Ticos than we first thought. We both fight against poverty, just some elements are more easily seen. Throughout this trip, God has opened our eyes. We pray that He will continue to do so.

We are so grateful to all of you who have supported us financially and prayerfully. By your encouragement, we have grown so much as a team. This opportunity was simply put, incredible.

See you soon, America!
