Costa Rica Day 2

Hey guys! Addy, Kendyll, and Hannah here! We're slightly delirious, so hang in there for this one...

We started off early with a yummy 7 a.m. breakfast before our first service opportunity. We hopped on our spunky blue bus and headed over to the local supermarket to buy groceries for local church families. We split up into groups of 2 and paraded around the store in an assembly line of carts running into virtually everything along the way. Somehow the 10 bags we were supposed to fill turned into 12, but ya know, the more the merrier. ARob and Audrey definitely won the award for best food packing #skills.

Next, we jumped back on our bus and headed to an impoverished neighborhood, consisting of more than 40,000 Nicaraguan refugees, in which our Costa Rican missionaries, Salvador and Veronica, have deep rooted connections with many families that are involved with their church ministry. It was an amazing opportunity, as we were able to enter into the houses and worlds of these families, even if just for a short time, dropping off groceries, praying with them, and experiencing the love of Christ that surpasses language barriers and social constructs.

The families we met were so full of joy and life despite their circumstances. Some live in poorly constructed homes, tiny in size but filled with large families, sometimes upwards of 30 people residing in one or two rooms. Many parents work full days, leaving young children at home in order to simply provide for their families. Something we found incredible was that even though their lives were extremely hard and taxing individually, when asked for prayer requests, their responses were always prayers for others rather than themselves. We definitely took away many life lessons from this experience.

Afterwards, we headed back to base for more delicious food, and MAN are they spoiling us in the kitchen! After lunch, we had a reflection time to process the morning food distributions and share with each other what we took away. It was cool to hear different perspectives from one another, though we all experienced the same thing.

Then it was back on the bus (yes, the spunky one) to do some souvenir shopping! We traveled to a downtown indoor market full of local vendors dying to sell us their colorful items. Molly Kate definitely won the award for best bargainer. Kendyll on the other hand... We all came away with a little something special for our families, friends, and ourselves.

A MUCH NEEDED nap time came before we suited up and headed out to play our first 11-a-side game in Costa Rica. The sunset on the way over the Costa Rican mountains was something we will never forget (hit Cyan up for a billion photos).

The field was located above San Jose, overlooking the city lights. The team we played consisted of Costa Rican national team players... yes, you read that right. It was a great experience for us as a team, as the opposition was extremely talented and pushed us to be better. Despite it being our first game back together in over 4 months, we overcame a shaky warmup and played some beautiful soccer. It's so good to be back with this team, as the sisterhood and love we have for one another is so rare to find at this level.

After the game, the two teams gathered together and Audrey bravely shared her testimony. The Lord really spoke through her, and it was beautiful to see the impact it had on everyone that listened. We finished by taking team photos and thanking the other team for such a fun night.

We got back to camp around 10 p.m. for a late night dinner. Conversation was deeply philosophical.... just ask Elsa. Today felt like 2 days in 1, but we wouldn't change a thing!

We can't wait to see what the rest of our time here holds! Thanks for hanging in there with us!

Addy, Kendyll, and Hannah <3 ;) :*
